The Deal: Charlotte blues singer releases her Blind Pig Records debut, Treat Me Right, on June 24, 2008.
The Good: It doesn’t take long for your foot to start tapping when you hear Robin Rogers sing. She draws you into the music and her seasoned vocals fit right up against the blues riffs and grooves. She goes from mellow to rocking and even finds time for something more Americana – the spectacular “Color-Blind Angel,” about civil rights worker Viola Liuzzo. No surprise that it placed second at the 2007 International Songwriters Competition.
The Bad: With so much attention being focused on the Americana genre, I almost wished that Rogers spent more of the album going with the sound of the stomping, roots and blues song “Color-Blind Angel.” She’s a fantastic blues singer, but that’s a stand-out track – stomping, clapping, harmonica, dobro. The music is simple; her vocals shine.
The Verdict: Yet another one of Charlotte’s great singers that the city should be proud to call a resident. Most of the album comes across as a solid blues effort with nothing to complain about.
