The Deal: Jack White’s other band releases sophomore album.

The Good: White’s influence and vocals are heavy on the album, but this isn’t The White Stripes. The band stands on its own with its own brand of rock. Every once in a while, an album comes out that isn’t defined by a single, but judged as the sum of its parts and as a whole. This is one of those albums. It’s impressive from start to finish. There are old-time elements that are worked into a modern rock sound that combines elements of The White Stripes, harmonies, a thicker, deeper sound and some all-around great songwriting. The slide guitar on “Top Yourself” helps separate it from a Stripes song, giving it a bluesy feel. It’s tough to pick out stand-out tracks when they’re all strong.

The Bad: With the success of The White Stripes, White will have to split time with The Raconteurs – one can only hope that both bands continue to release new music.

The Verdict: Too often side projects don’t live up to the hype of the original parts, but this one surpasses any expectations.
