The Deal: Another in a series of E.P.s released by Raleigh, N.C., band.
The Good: Led by vocalist/guitarist J. Chris Smith, Patty Hurst Shifter switch gears a tad on this collection that leans toward reflective rock constructed with the added benefit of piano, swooning harmonies and jazzy drums. This is hum-along pop with definitive indie rock ethos, albeit more meditative than the garagey bombast of their last record. The 4-track E.P. opens with the near perfect pop gem “California Postcard,” yet the quartet’s American rock is hewn and stitched in the fertile alleys of North Carolina’s Triangle. Guitarist Marc E. Smith’s nimble fingers add volume to the occasionally sad dissonance, all the while tempering the enthusiasm with subtle tones.
The Bad: It’s over too quickly – hoping for a full-length next.
The Verdict: These four songs sit with composure among their restive collection of tunes.
