The Deal: Dread-locked Aussie’s roots music with a message.
The Good: The talented strummer sounds comfortable with whatever he’s playing — dobro, banjo, guitar. He’s got a roots sound that’s infused with hints of blues, funk, jazz, rock and reggae. There are guitar moments that shine from song to song — the intro to “Funky Tonight,” the solo in “Daniella” — but it’s not a showcase a la Steve Vai. The Trio is also comprised of a drummer and stand-up bass. It’s hip and happy and a fun listen all-around.
The Bad: Having seen the “Oceans” video and knowing the talent that is held in Butler’s hands, I sometimes wish he would showcase it a little more. He finds time to try his voice at jazz scatting from time to time, but usually it does little to enhance what’s going on. I was ready to trash the slow songs, such as “Caroline,” but after a second listen, I can’t even find fault in the mellow.
The Verdict: His last album, Sunrise Over Sea, went five-times platinum in his native Australia. If America catches on, Butler could be huge in the States, too. If you haven’t seen the YouTube video of Butler performing the instrumental “Oceans,” do so now. Notice the guitar virtuosity and enjoy the music.
