We all have one song we know we shouldn’t like – but do anyway. So, here it goes.. I think I am about to lose some credibility. Assuming that I even had any with you, the fearless readers, to begin with.

I like Katy Perry’s song “Waking up in Vegas.” There. I said it. The truth is out. Do with it what you will. I can’t help it. I don’t like Katy Perry. I don’t like most pop music that’s out there today. With acts like Lady Ga(g) Ga(g), the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus roaming the pop currents like a great white taking out baby seals on Shark Week, I try to avoid those waters at all costs. Yet, somehow, there seems to be that stray pop tune that makes it through my defenses, and becomes the guilty pleasure I can’t seem to get enough of.

You know you’ve been there too, right?!? And no, I’m not talking about the songs you hate that always seem to get lodged in your brain and never leave (like “Hey Mickey!” for example – and yes, you will now have that stuck in your head for the rest of the day – you’re welcome). I’m talking about those songs you have no business liking, but when the tune comes on the radio, you can’t help but listen. You might even find yourself surfing those dark, dangerous waters LOOKING for the song!

This is what Miss Perry does to me. I’m not proud of it, but it’s true. As soon as I hear the sound of that slot machine, I get all excited and crank up the volume dial. I know I should be spinning the channel dial, but I just can’t. It’s kryptonite to Superman. “GIVE ME SOME CASH OUT BAY-BAH!”

And it does appear that this is a common phenomenon. My brother, who listens to music that I’m sure is sponsored by Satan, and wishes cruel and unusual death to pop stars, can’t get enough of Pink – and her hit of the minute “Sober.” For my wife, it seems that Taylor Swift’s adolescent song of angst “Love Story” is the ticket. This makes me feel better; at least I’m not alone. Maybe there’s a support group that meets weekly somewhere “Hi, my name is Jason and I like shallow pop songs…”

So, how about you, fearless reader? What’s your guilty pleasure? That one song you just can’t get enough of? Leave a comment below… if you dare to admit it. Remember, we’re all friends here. Admitting there is a problem is the first step in recovery…

  1. Lazer – You are correct. Had I written this 2 months ago, “Love Bug” would have been in the running! Thankfully, “Love Bug” isn’t on the radio every 5 minutes any more. Miss Perry has taken the Jonas Bros. place.

  2. I admit I like Miley Cyrus’s “Climb”. I usually can’t stand “Hannah Montana” anything, but I really like “Climb”. Also. you pegged your brother and his taste in music. HA! HA!

  3. Ok, I like Britney Spears’ “Toxic”… but not as much as Local H’s cover of her song. There. I admitted it.

  4. Hey, don’t feel bad, I’m 52 and even go to her concerts…last one in Columbus…next Indy…been to allot of them over time, from Wings with Linda to Bowie to Springsteen to in the Back in the USA days to Stray Cats…got to admit, she puts on a really good show….a fun show and she does know how to work the crowd. She puts on a concert that does make you forget the real world. Makes it worth the bucks to me..steve

  5. My guilty pleasure is any old Alabama love song. I love a little bit of “Why Lady Why”. :sigh: I also dislike Miley Cyrus..something about her face bothers me. I think it’s something about her mouth and teeth region. I am going to start reading your blogs Younger. Keep me entertained! hahahaha.

  6. I break out in song when Elton John and Kiki Dee sing “Don’t go breaking my heart.” I actually know the entire song word for word. I should have forgotten this song when it was written in 1976.
