I caught Red All Over the evening before Thanksgiving and the show sent me into the holiday with a sense of satisfaction since the group is contributing to Charlotte’s diverse live music scene. I originally saw the group perform a short set at a CrownTown Showdown and found myself looking forward to a full show.
The group is influenced by bands such as Lush, Curve, Joy Division, Portishead and The Cure and features Eliza Grey on vocals, Jarrett Bury on bass and Brian Fetner on percussion. The group performs with tracks that include drums and an array of synthesizers that pulse-out dreamy minor chords. The group’s regular guitarist couldn’t make this show, but Bury found a sub at the last minute that nailed it.
Red All Over’s sound is distinctive and their performances exceptional — both Grey and Bury physically express their music and know how to connect with their audience. Grey sings with passion (at times it seems that she’s singing directly to/for you) you find yourself waiting to see what dance move Bury is going to bust out next. Also, the group visually enhances their performances by bringing along an array of lights and a bit of smoke.
The only negative thing I have to say is that the set ran short. Most headlining groups that perform at the Double Door perform for at least an hour and forty-five minutes (if not longer), but this group’s set simply ended too soon. But it was Thanksgiving Eve and perhaps they wanted to keep the audience wanting more…
