Photographer Dave Long is a native Charlotteon whose several works embody changing landscapes and the vanishing of Carolina landmarks. Partial to startling contrast, he implements black and white in a majority of his pieces.
1) Books: “Mad Ducks and Bears” by George Plimpton — a book about old football. It’s just really good and really funny.
2) Movie: “Lawrence of Arabia. It is so majestic. The actual landscape is very visual.”
3) Music: “The Rolling Stones. I remember seeing them at what used to be Cricket Arena, in 1965. Tickets were 3 and 5 dollars. The sound was horrible, as they played through the PA system.
4) Restaurant: “I love the places that are closing up — the mom and pop places. And those were my favorite [places to eat]. It becomes hard to compete with the big guys”
5) Experiences: “My exhibit on landscapes. Three years after [the photographs], a very short period of time, certain houses were gone. I was really surprised [at] how I was archiving things. I am also honored to receive the arts and science grant for my show featured at The Beat — a gallery on North Davidson Street.”
