Innovative Thinking
To The Editors:
Re: “Get Over It” (CL, December 26), Tara Servatius is one of the most innovative thinkers in Charlotte. I enjoyed her column challenging city hall to recognize the contribution of activities like dance clubs to creating a vital, engaging space. Until these places opened, downtown had all the charm of a bank lobby — beautiful but cold. Of course, I remember the Charlotte I moved to 30 years ago. Then there was Furr’s Seed Store and Builder’s Hardware at opposite ends of Trade Street, shopping at Belk’s and Ivey’s, a drugstore with a lunch counter on the square, easy on-street parking, and lots of bus riders to liven things up. Downtown just seemed more fun when everyone wasn’t dressed for success.

Lucy Goes One Step Beyond
To The Editors:
Re: Lucy Perkins’ “Once the Fun Is Over” (CL, December 19), in which she writes, “the only thing more anti-climactic than the day after Christmas is probably childbirth,” your resident curmudgeon has once again extended herself far beyond the bounds of her own personal experience. I would have applauded and even enjoyed her article had she left her comparisons with the dismal Waterworld. . .but, as usual, she had to go one step beyond and make the article not only inaccurate, but a chore to complete. Her claims to children being nothing more than squirmy, naked, nameless half-wits would be laughable if they weren’t sadly based on her own self-proclaimed ignorance of children and parenthood. One has to wonder if her parents had the same enmity towards parenthood. Here’s to Perkins writing a column that (once, just once) doesn’t so closely resemble the loathsome ramblings of an angst-ridden teenager.

Credit Where Credit Is Due
To The Editors:
In reference to Charles Held’s letter to the editor (“Arena Hucksterism,” December 19): I was in favor of the new arena that failed on June 5. However, I think CO$T needs to quit taking too much credit for their “victory.” The real credit goes to Mayor McCrory (for vetoing the Living Wage ordinance) and more importantly, H.E.L.P. The referendum would have passed until the Living Wage was vetoed. I’m tired of Held and CO$T taking total credit for defeating the referendum. I hope to see the Hornets remain in Charlotte and a new arena built uptown to benefit all of Charlotte. I appreciate Jeff Beaver telling the real truth without the emotional “smoke screens.”
