Don’t Talk About It

To The Editors:

In reference to Lucy Perkins’ “Frailty, Thy Name Is Not Woman” (CL, January 9): Lucy, you may know a little about women but you don’t know much about men. Men do not discuss menstruation, childbirth, or jiggly boobs. Never. As a matter of fact, men seldom talk about sex or women. Work, basketball, football, baseball, golf, politics, stock market — yes. Women are most critical of other women. Ask women and they will tell you they would rather talk to and/or be with men because men are not as condescending, critical, or judgmental as women. Go ahead and ask. I enjoy Lucy Perkins’ column.

Don’t Dis Ms. Lucy

To The Editors:

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read the letter from Matthew Alexander, the reader who was offended by Lucy Perkins’ use of the term “pissed off” (“Lucy and the Limits of Lingo,” Letters, January 9). Lucy Perkins is the freshest voice in Charlotte, in my mind a kind of hip “everyman/everywoman” columnist. I don’t always agree with her, but I really like her outspokenness and the way she writes in a style that sounds as if she’s talking to you. And I appreciate a gutsy newspaper like CL that tells things the way they are. People like Mr. Alexander should stick to reading more “polite” magazines like Atlantic or National Review — which are fine magazines that I enjoy, don’t get me wrong — and leave alternative newspapers to those of us who are in touch with what’s going on outside of Sunday School. Keep up the good work.

Small Misunderstanding

To The Editors:

What was the point of the story about small people (“Standing Tall” by Sam Boykin, January 9)? Don’t these folks get stared at and pointed out enough (as was told in your article) without you making them stand out even more? I know some bars and so forth have “dwarf tossing” contests, and I even heard of a radio station out West that had a contest for how many midgets could fit in a Volkswagen Beetle (a new one); this is some of the kind of humiliation little people have to put up with. These are people with normal feelings, jobs, etc. I think your article will make more mean people be on the lookout for little people to pick on.
