Neil Lerner is an associate professor of music at Davidson College, a commentator on 89.9 WDAV’s “Reel Music”, and he is currently writing a book about the music in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

1) Music: He recently saw a performance of James Tenney’s “Having Never Written a Note for Percussion” near the World Trade Center site. “The simplicity, directness, and effectiveness of the piece blew me away.”

2) Movies: He was impressed by a Buster Keaton silent film from the 1920s at ImaginOn accompanied by the music of Eytan Uslan, a ragtime pianist and jazz improviser.

3) Books: 1984 by George Orwell. “I read it first in the 8th grade. What chills me now is how prophetic he was.”

4) Restaurants: He enjoys “chili and veggie burgers” from Lupie’s in Huntersville.

5) Hobbies: Besides collecting Edison cylinders and phonographs, he goes to the Y for cycle classes “almost every day.”
