The Gravity Girls is a Charlotte rap duo, comprised of Amanda “Mandy” Philemon and Melissa Goodman. Since their formation in May 2006, they have played numerous house parties as well as shows at The Milestone, SK Netcafé and Eden.
Philemon and Goodman have known each other for 15 years. They went to high school together and later reconnected. “From us hanging out and just being silly we kind of just started making up these poems and raps and rapping to people we would see in the bars,” says Philemon.
Goodman now resides in New York, where she works as a hair dresser. Philemon works at Grand Central and Reflection Sound Studios in Charlotte.
The Gravity Girls have around eight or nine songs they perform, which include titles like “Big Dick Picnic.” They also play a cover of ACDC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.”
Many Charlotteans share diverse opinions about The Gravity Girls. In response to this, Goodman says, “I think it’s funny. I never thought about it until we had something published in Creative Loafing (see for more details: http://charlotte.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A178651) and there were very polarized comments on that. It shows that whether you love us or hate us, you’ve heard of us.”
“We are not trying to get out there and make a hit record,” Goodman says. “If I am going to become well known it is going to be as a hair dresser and for Mandy it is going to be for her abilities as a manager. It’s not going to be as a recording artist per se. We just like to have fun and it’s fun to do and it’s fun for people to dance with us and sing with us.”

just a lil correction on the article. you seem to have “accidentally” forgot one third of the band. that would be chris buchanan. you know, the one that wrote the music and the beats. nice “ladies”.
Its true, Chris was a pretty major aspect of that band. How many Gravity Girls shows have there been since its become a duo anyways???
Yeah Chris was pretty major. For the record, how many public shows has there been since its become a ‘duo’
The beats and music are what made what little there was what it was. Beats alone do not make a song, and when are they playing out again? Somebody wanna explain why this is even relevant? We have so many great local bands, it seems silly to devote a page to a nonexistent ‘band’.
maybe i am missing something, but i like these girls! i’ve only seen 1 show and it was soooo much fun! rattlesnake? dizzle? who are you freaks????
yeah, what youre missing is that no one is slamming them as a band. simply mentioning that it was underhanded to exclude and not mention the guy that wrote and plays the music. with out him, its just two girls rapping without beats or music, and there is no show. but you should know that if you ever saw them play. an observant fan would have seen 3 people on stage.
Yeah well there “use” to be three people on the stage. Seeing as though he is no longer a part of the band. there really would be no reason to write about him. that really would make no sense. This is an article about two people doing what they enjoy, and really im sure that “gravity girls” ended up being more than they expected. And if it entertains some of us along the way then more power to them. As for the people that have a problem with this. who cares?! they are just mad that they are old, lame and will never accomplish anything other than talking “shit” over a computer.
Once again. Obviously we aren’t allowed to leave comments that not everyone approves. Wah. You guys respond to opinions like teenagers. (Law: Of course, you’re probably not much older than a teenager. No wait, I know who you are and you’re definitely old enough to know better. Your spelling is a dead giveaway.) Grow up and get your life together.
um well first i dont think that yalls little smart ass comments were needed. So no not .wah. If you wanna do that you shouldnt have done it on here. And me grow up im half your age and act more grown up than you. so yeah that makes a ton of sense. but what ever. the songs are catchy and fun, and people enjoy it. so go ahead and be parade pissers and rug pullers, its just bringing them more attention.
B-Snake.
B-Snake who? B-Snake, AKA Chris Buchanan, you know, the guy, who set up all the equipment while the Gravity Cunts ran around bullshitting and acting like whores!
You girls will be going straight to hell for what you’ve done! Liars!!!!
sounds like some personal business. why don’t you kids take care of this somewhere else? but to the girls, i checked out your myspace, i love your look and the sound. fuck these guys. sounds like a bit of jealousy to me. keep doing what you’re doing!
Hey law. Guess what? I’m voicing an opinion. And so are you. But you know what? Be careful. Many people’s reputation preceeds them. Believe me. Secondly, “smart ass comments”? Could you quote which ones are smart asssed? And how so? And what exactly is a “parade pisser”? Is that a regional term? And, if you say people enjoyed it, yes they did. All 8 of them at the last show. And 6 of them were in bands playing that night. And while I do have better things to do with my life than comment on this, I’ll not sit idly when things are distorted.
p.s. Anyone see Quiet Company at Snug the other night?
the overt misogyny here is unparalleled.
I’ve never seen so many petty things said in my life. I am pretty sure i know where most of the negativity is coming from. From people who were once associated with the girls. People who desperately wanted nothing more than to share in the fun of actually being yourself. And when they found out that you were snakes they wrote your asses off like giving a car to goodwill. That is what it is about. You thought that if you hung around and came to all the shows. They would make you an honorary member so you could co-opt part of someone else’s life because yours is bland like c-span and white bread. And some reason the state of ohio, texas, and Tennessee come to mind. I’m so close aren’t I. The thing is you let your personal problems turn into you badmouthing something that you used to love. While i am not for certain i think that is a pretty good explanation. And as far as the non inclusion of chris let’s just say that even if he was an integral part of the band he was a effing creep. The dude reminds me of someone they are going to do a city confidential on in a couple of years. Dude needs to get a life and go play some canasta or eat dinner at 3:00 o’clock and be in bed right after the new 4done. seriously You guys opened the gates with your personal attacks but you sacrificed your footing for a killing strike. You’ve gotten nothing accomplished. You are all spinning your wheels and you hate that anyone can prove to you that if you put your mind to it you can actually improve you life. But you will all give up screw each other and die face down in a of Fried Pickles, PBR and Guilt. Thanks for your time. and G.G. They wanna know you…But they Can’t.
hal sarah and kathy are quite possibly the most jealous haters in the QC. hope that you feel good about your own non-existant band. Whomie Machine? Who the Machine? Homer Machine? It was something like that right. get a life all of you.
GRAVITY GIRLS ROCK MY WORLD!
Dang, you guys look really beautiful in the shoot!
I think “trailoftears” is Melissa of the Gravity Girls. If that’s true, it strikes me as weird that you are assuming a pseudonym so no one will know it’s you commenting on your own article. Whether or not it’s Melissa or one of her friends,I want to set the record straight.
This is my first and only comment on here. The “…the state of… Texas” statement implies that you think I have been leaving comments, hence, you felt compelled to say some mean-spirited things about me. You should know better.
Sarah, Dizzle, and Rattlesnake (and apparently others)seem to be of the opinion that the article implies that you girls did it all by yourselves, including the beats and music. This implication is further strengthened by the fact that you still have my music on your Myspace site.
You had a choice. You could’ve taken your critisism like an adult. Instead, you chose to be slanderous, child-like, and petty.
Chris
You know what? I’ve sat quiet for long enough. This commentary started as comment on the omission of Chris’ contribution to Gravity Girls. And now, as always, it has been turned into all about a couple of people. (And if we want to talk about ‘snakes’ and character, then let’s start dragging out skeletons from the closet if you like). Jealous? No. Holding people accountable? Yes. So if you want to call names and get into people’s character, I strongly urge you to reconsider. Hopefully one day you’ll realize that people are held accountable and responsible for their actions and words, and that you can’t fool all the people all the time.
Watch what you say. I suggest you stay away from slander and libelous comments. Look up the words, they’re on wikipedia for the challenged.
I know I’ve haven’t seen any of the show’s but I know that they all 3 had involvement in the group. I think it is unfair and unjust that the 3rd party(Chris) was never mentioned when he was involved in the music that was Gravity Girls. Even if he is no longer with them or not, he should have been acknowledged. For he did have a great part in everything that even caused all this.
Melissa, please accept my apology.
I’m really confused as to where all this is going, we were stating the fact that you falsified information in your article. And to call ME jealous??? riiiiight jealous of what??? Homie Machine wasn’t a band we had that was MELISSA’s doing! Remember tards, I tried to put an end to this back in July, when I was deamed guilty by association for dumb shit and told to be Sarah’s friend because you weren’t matter enough to let me be friends with both parties.
This is the dumbest bullshit i’ve ever seen in my life, grow the fuck up girls, keep your reputation sacred, if you want any career don’t blow the name up like you are. this is bad for you. take your criticism to heart not to your big ass heads. if its music you love, then make it, rap away do what you want, i don’t care what you do now. I just don’t agree that you left such an important person out of the beginning equation.
say whatever you want to about the band, music, vocals, etc…, but the photo looks a little droopy.
On behalf of every single person who’s left a comment positive or negative, since not a single one of us has had the poise or class to do so, I’d like to apologize to Creative Loafing and all innocent parties for all the bull shit this article has brought.
isnt gravity girls an ironic name considering the severe lack of gravity on the girl on the right?
This just started for us as a pissed off thing that someone was omitted from the overall GG thing regardless of personal circumstances. But this has gotten way too nasty. Enough. Let’s just let this fade…
I have seen this group more than once and enjoyed them a lot. That one chick is really hot. The other one, not so much. I thought the guy was really cute too.
FIRST of all, chris, you’re not even friends with mandy and melissa anymore, stop whining.
SECOND, to all the people who think they are all high and mighty…who are you people anyway? i mean, you must not be too great if you have to hide behind stupid nicknames to mask who you really are.
THIRD, mandy is my sister. melissa is like a sister to me and honestly, all this bullshit about who is in the band, who isnt…is it even a band…they’re great…then they’re not…who fucking cares? everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no matter how lame it is. In fact, as lame as my opinion probably is to many of the people reading this, i like my sisters creativeness and the fact that the things they rap about are funny. i like the gravity girls!
lastly, ya’ll looked GREAT in the photo! i loved it and haha, so did the whole family at the birthday party (right mandyy??)
<3 anna
p.s. i'm sorry i didnt get to this sooner mandy, it would have been funny/mean, trust me, if it wasnt 2 in the morning..... but hey, that's probably a good thing.
i love you mandy!!!!
Look at my comments. They are signed, “Chris”. Those are the only comments I left. “trailoftears” was the only comment with whining. Tell me, Anna, who do you think is hiding behind the “trailoftears” nickname?
I didn’t start this thread, and I don’t know everyone who voiced thier opinion concerning my omission. Am I supposed to tell them they can’t voice thier opinion on a public forum?
What I meant to say was “trailoftears” left the only comment with whining.
