Satish Cherian felt like Uptown was screaming for retail. To answer that cry, he recently opened O1NE (pronounced ONE), a skate-themed clothing boutique, on the corner of Trade and Mint streets.
“Truthfully, if I wasn’t going to do the store in Uptown Charlotte, I wasn’t going to do the store in Charlotte,” says Cherian, originally from New Jersey. “I just feel like there’s so much potential here, and there’s no real retail. I feel like I’m bringing that whole boutique style here, with labels that are up and coming, that you don’t see everywhere else. I’ve got some of the hottest brands, from New York, L.A., Sweden, Japan.”
When you walk into the store, the first thing you’ll notice is dozens of skateboards hung up on the wall. Cherian says that he’s a skateboarder and just wants to add to the huge skate scene Charlotte already has here. “Basically bring that whole up north, east coast culture down here,” he says.
Men’s and women’s shirts and folded neatly on shelves, and hats are tucked just as neatly onto individual box-like shelves for display. “I wanted the store to have a real high-end look to it,” Cherian says. “I’m not only appealing to the skateboarder or the snowboarder, but I’m appealing to the banker or the consultant, where they might not be into [the skate scene] or know about it, but they’ll still come in here and respect the look of the store.”
“Times have changed, in fashion and everything,” he says. “You want to go out and look good and look right. You can’t go to the mall anymore. You want sneakers or boots or something like that, you’ve got to go elsewhere. You don’t want to look like everyone else.”
O1NE’s grand opening will go down this Saturday. Cherian says you can stop through anytime between 9 a.m. and as late as 10 p.m.

I would love to see this kids buisness plan. He will be out of business in 6 months.
Good for him. Even though times are tough we need small buisness owners to keep trying to open stores and make it happen. I think that the store is unique and will appeal to people Uptown.
Cherian must be a idiot. He obviously hasn’t been to south end/camden road. Black Sheep and Niche have held it down for years. Just because you can afford a spot downtown doesn’t mean you brought the boutique style to Charlotte. I give him less then a year.
geez haters, pump the breaks. spray all you want but if homeboy has enough jack to open a gig in uptown he obviously enough jack to power through the start up phase. a new boutique like this is a good thing for charlotte….unless you’re wearing pleated khakis right now with your blackberry on your braided belt.
dude needs to drop the word “skate” out of his vocabulary. thats not a skate shop at all. he practically yelled at one of my boys for setting his board on his floors. is this dude serious? if he wants respect in the skate scene in charlotte he has some work to do. he also said he doesn’t want Nike SB because its another hop on the band wagon. i look down and whats on his feet? the freshie pair of SBs.
manfred windsor…you sound like a complete tool….you probably never skateboarded in your life.
Wow, this is really funny. I just read this for the first time tonight. I love the hate it only makes me stronger so keep on with it.
As for my business plan your speaking on a grown man who worked his butt off to get to where I am. You think this is my only job? Haha thats cute! Don’t worry my brand & store will be around for a long time so get used to me, I’m not going anywhere!
As for the other shops I don’t know them and they def. don’t know me or my team so I’ll leave it at that.
I never yelled at any kid i might of asked him to take his board off the floor b/c of the amount of work that was put into bringing my store to life. Am I not entitled to that? As for the Nike issue I NEVER said I didn’t want Nike. I said I wasn’t worried about it right now I got a ton of love and respect for Nike and hell yes you’ll see me in fresh Nike’s so get used to that too.
This gossip reminds me of grade school, so I’ll treat it the same way and pay it no mind. I just thought I’d address the issues that were brought against me, my brand and my store.
pshhhhhh….. you’re too fat to skate, homeboy… your shop is standard whatev’s and i’m spreading the word about you being lame to skateboarders…but it’s no wonder you yell at us..since you aren’t a skateboarder, you don’t know how to relate to us…
from one grown man to another, im in no way trying to say you didn’t work to get where you are. i think more people helping the skate scene in charlotte is great, but the street wear thing i think will come and go. its like when your the new kid at school, lay back and watch whats around you see whats going on, whose who, etc. then put your foot in and build your respect.
as for the “skate” part of your shop. i didn’t even get a chance to see the gear you had, after the remarks about the floor, the SB thing, and seeing that the only baker board you had on the wall was a terry kennedy board i just walked out. i was over it. i guess skating now a days is about rapping, gold teeth, and big chains.
anyway, is there a place to set up a board if a skateboarder comes in and wants to purchase a board or a complete? or would that be to much wear and tear on keeping your shop neat? i mean there could be i just didnt look.
do you have wheels, trucks, and the rest of the hardware? if so, what kind. lets hear about the skate part of the shop.
I see the trolls are out and about. Give the man a chance on his dream. I can remember a time when Charlotte had NOTHING like this, and now you want to run somebody out of town for trying? Would you rather have another Gap? How about no stores at all? This shop only adds to the culture and flavor of the city. In times like these we should be cheering this kind of thing on, not knocking it down.
yeah…we be on pa-trollllll…. trolls with goals…you know what i mean??? reclaiming skateboarding for skateboarders….. who has a grand opening party in NY for a store in NC??? silly
….just because you are involved with skating …that doesn’t mean your helping it. just because you own a company….that doesn’t mean your helping skateboarding…
if you’re a kook people will know it.
i agree this shop helps to break the mold of boring charlotte banker bullshit….that’s a plus to people that may see his store…and chances are…those people don’t skate…so good for him…but skaters will know real quick if he’s a kook and is exclusivly after the almighty dollar …..
skateboarding is an over saturated market right now…..
i can’t even believe it’s a fucking market
This guy kicked us out from skating outside his “boutique” and told us although he sells skateboards, we are not allowed to set them down in his shop. I went in there once and walked right out the back door.
Yo I know the dude and he doing his thing let him do it. The people that are hating are probaly the people that had a business and it failed. Or they don’t have the brains or the guts to start their own! With things are now in the world we should really go out and support people like this, so he can do good instead of trying to tear the man down. He showed me and my family love when we went in here and the stuff iI bought was hot and I’ve got nothing but compliments on it. So instead of bumping your gums and talking out the side of your neck go support the man support the city you live in and quit hating it’s not good for yor health! oh for the ones or o1nes (lol) that are hating I have a question “can you do what he doing?” If so go do it and shut up! Ed “trap star” G
First off, you can be easy with the whole “hardcore from jersey” act, because you’re probably from somewhere in PA, and if you ARE from jersey, my guess is that you’re from somewhere like upper saddle river or something. And you would think that for someone who was trying to contribute to the skateboard/street culture in charlotte (which niche and black sheep have had on lock for years), that you would take an opportunity to get to know the local shop owners, skaters, etc.. who have BEEN contributing to charlotte’s street/skate culture.
It’s really funny to me too, that for someone who claims to be contributing to a culture, and trying to keep it “real” or whatever, is targeting yuppie bankers, which in turn would be just watering down a subculture that you claim to be trying to preserve.
When I first walked into the “boutique,” I figured I would be back at some point to maybe cop some hats or a jacket or something, but it literally only took 2 minutes TOPS, to make me never want to step foot in your place ever again. Also, coming into a community-driven scene like charlotte’s is a lot different from where you’re from.. I WILL tell you that running your mouth about niche and black sheep is not a good start in the city.
Also, I hope you plan on carrying some more lines than just 10 deep, LRG, and in4mation. Who’s even wearing LRG these days anyway? It’s not 2003 homey, get with the program. Your comment: “As for the other shops I dont know them and they def. dont know me or my team so Ill leave it at that.” That’s what I’m talking about right there.. anyone who would want to contribute to a local scene/community, would not have that mentality, instead.. they might go introduce themselves to the other shops (at the very least). Nobody cares about your team in ny, or wherever they’re from either.
So pretty much what I’m trying to say is – you’re a midget, and if your shit was so tight and you had mad respect up north, then you’d be able to set up shop up there instead of here.
Let me also inform you about a large majority of the bankers you’re targeting.. they could care less about your little store, streetwear, and skateboarding.
PS – if you’re really trying to be taken seriously with the skateboard shop thing, you should learn how to set up a complete, and then make some room so if someone bought a complete set-up, they’d be able to skate it out of the store. (or at least a block away from the store so they don’t get yelled at.)
Get at me for your going out of business sale too, I might buy your counter-top.
first off, name sound about fruity as hell.. only damn thing o1ne about your store is you bein the only O1NE buyin shit in it.
second you feelin yourself too much, shit comin across OD homo.. that part where you say someshit like you gonna bring the east coast culture down here.. bitch ain’t nobody down here want your old johnny blaze wearing ass givin us south niccas direction.. have you turned on a radio lately ho? ain’t nobody down here walking around askin when the next black moon show is.. get the fuuuuuuuuuck outta here.
this shit ain’t even popped already seems old as hell.. and your money don’t seem right either opening up some small ass shop trying to pass it has a “boutique”. The hell shawty if thats the case my damn hall closet is a boutique for any of yall hoes that wanna holler.. shit way more flyer that this ecko unlimited senior year of high school lookin mess.
oh damn, one last thing pimpin.. charlotte be gettin mad humid about 3 months from now shawty your store gon be floppin while you lyin up in your crib with no AC tryin to cry on yourself to keep cool. that’s right about when imma drive through in that ’08 mercedes, killin all swag and come scoop your dime piece.
ill holla at you in that welfare line nicca!! 11111
or should i say.. O1NE… OR REALLY NAH… N1ONE!!!!!
Hello Satish,
Congratulations on your newly formed business. I believe I’m doing this right, I clicked the link to “email you” so hopefully only you can see this. My name is Terry Folson and I’m the manager of the TJ Maxx store #344 on East Independence Blvd. Satish – what TJ Maxx really thrives on is overbuying from stores such as your self. Typically small boutiques like your current company will contact us when they need to unload their merchandise that cannot sell at retail. I think judging by the looks of how things are going with this whole “streetwear” fad, we both recognize that soon the only people really wanting to wear these gaudy clothes are impoverished hispanic painters – and they’re going to want it for a couple of dollars. That’s where our relationship will flourish Satish so I do hope you contact me soon so we can fill out some paperwork.
Best,
Terry Folson
