Applying President Barack Obama’s inspirational words, “Yes, we can!” to pipe dreams can be a very, very bad thing. It’s great to have confidence, but at some point, one has to accept that not everyone can be famous. The characters in writer-director Neil Drumming’s Big Words — set during the night of the 2008 presidential election — understand this all too well. They were once part of a successful hip-hop group that has since fizzled out of the spotlight. Now the thirty-somethings face the harsh reality of an ordinary life. Former rapper John (Dorian Missick) struggles to find work and frequents a local strip club where he drops dollars he should be saving; James (Gbenga Akinnagbe) has transformed into a gay publicist plagued by his closeted rapping days; and Terry, aka DJ Malik (Darien Sills-Evans), continues to pursue music with little-to-no success.
