There’s no doubt Earl Sweatshirt’s reputation has preceded him. It wasn’t all that long ago that Earl was like Odd Future’s unicorn. The collective’s most talented, spirited, but seldom-seen MC was off in a family-imposed exile in Samoa while his music exploded on the Internet. His story was a hipster music blogger’s wet dream, and they spun from it plenty of partially-informed lore like, “Tyler is cool. Frank is awesome. But Earl is the mastermind.” Fast-forward to 2014, and we’ve had Earl back for a while. His 2013 album Doris dropped to critical acclaim and plenty of told-you-so posturing. But did he live up to the legend? Who cares? He can rap his ass off. (Mike McCray)
