Gregg Allman, The New Familiars

GREGG ALLMAN

The incendiary swing of the Allman Brothers’ jazzy, bluesy, country rock surges from the band’s deep well of hot-shit guitarists — Gregg Allman’s elder brother Duane, Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes. Yet the Allmans’ gospel soul has always resided in Gregg Allman. As an organist, Allman is no slouch in the virtuoso department, but it’s his weathered, evocative growl that proves to be his primary instrument, fueling the band’s most heartfelt moments. Solo, Allman has always been more grounded and rootsy than the ABB mothership. His checkered career has been punctuated with drug addiction, multiple marriages and legal and health problems, but somehow Allman’s inner compass brought him back to his soul-stirring roots with the masterful 2011 collection of obscure and gem-like covers, Low Country Blues. As if to make up for Allman’s back-porch grooves, Charlotte-based openers the New Familiars provide the rebel yelling, Southern rock firepower. Yet the New Familiars eschew Skynyrd-like showboating for an visceral mix of scorched-earth folk, supercharged country blues and acoustic grit, making this bunch of ramblin’ men the perfect counterpart to Allman’s midnight rider.
