Il Trittico

Call it triple Puccini. Between its death-aversary nods to Verdi and Wagner, Opera Carolina is bringing us Il Trittico, three marvelous Puccini one-acts that were intended as a triptych but are often broken apart. The rarest of these, “Il Tabarro (The Cloak),” begins the evening, a tale of bitter jealousy — and vicious revenge — by a middle-aged husband on his far-younger wife. This melodrama is followed by the sublimity of “Suor Angelica,” a young Sister at an Italian convent who has done penance for seven years, atoning for the shame she has brought upon her royal family. Maybe best of all is the concluding “Gianni Schicchi” with Puccini’s most beloved melody, “O! mio babbino caro.” With a title character based on a cunning rascal that Dante consigned to the eighth circle of Hell in his famed Inferno, “Schicchi” is triumphant proof that Puccini could have been very successful writing full-length comic operas. Dongwon Shin is the suspicious mind in “Tabarro,” Jill Gardner is the tragic Sister Angelica, and Chen-Ye Yuan takes the title role in “Schicchi,” sharing the spotlight with Melinda Whittington as his precious daughter.
