Lucy Kaplansky

LUCY KAPLANSKY

Steadily rising to the upper rungs of American singer-songwriters, Lucy Kaplansky has tread a revolving path that led her to become a folk singer while still a teenager, then become a clinical psychologist and again a full-time folk singer. With absorbing originals and harmonious takes on select covers, Kaplansky writes little gems that are peeks into the travails of human interactions without preachy pretensions. Her singing is naturally emotive, while her music is teased with country, blues, pop and jazz. She has lent her voice and worked on recordings by Shawn Colvin, John Gorka, Suzanne Vega, Nanci Griffith and a myriad of other fine songwriters. Her voice has thickened a bit over the years, but remains intriguing, and her lucid folk songs only get better. (Samir Shukla)
