Don’t worry if you can’t quite decipher the cursive scrawl that flows chaotically across Nathaniel Lancaster’s artwork. As is normally the case, the painting titles usually reveal what is otherwise illegible text. In “What Has Happened to the Majesty We Once Knew?” we see a fusion of images: the portrait of a man, bucks and grass. These images, all out of place, might represent the relationship between man and nature. As the tangle of words bleeds into an all-white background, we’re reminded that environmental discord and harmony are ever-changing. Lancaster uses both oils and acrylics to create contemplative juxtapositions and solid portraits with thick brushstrokes that come together for sharp details. This exhibit is well worth the trip up to Lake Norman. Come during the Cornelius Art Crawl, when there will be a reception (Aug. 9, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) with the artist in attendance.
