The Cult, White Hills

THE CULT Yeah, some of the ferocity of their “hitmaking” years may be lacking and vocalist Ian Astbury’s snarl can’t quite reach the higher registers, but he and guitarist Billy Duffy have guided various incarnations of the Cult through nearly three decades with enough firepower to still influence younger bands while gathering new fans. Duffy’s guitar, of course, still sounds as sharp and wicked as ever. Their early incarnation was of goth-rock catalysts; later, they helped instigate alternative rock and have been playing down-and-dirty hard rock for the past couple of decades. Sure, fans still prefer old hits like “Fire Woman” and “She Sells Sanctuary” at gigs, but the newer material, especially tracks like “Lucifer” from last year’s album, Choice of Weapon, revisits the beloved Cult sound of the mid-’80s and early ’90s.
