Opera Carolina hasn’t brought The Flying Dutchman to Belk Theater since the 1995-96 season. Richard Wagner and Satan were considerably kinder to the eternally suffering sea captain, allowing him shore leave once every seven years. If he finds a woman who will love him before his ghost ship must lift anchor, he can be redeemed from his endless wandering. Enter Senta, daughter of a mortal sea captain, and the start of an eerie romance — marking the first masterwork of Wagner’s career and the beginnings of the composer’s trademark love-death plot device. After singing the Wotan the Wanderer role for the Metropolitan Opera’s recent production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, bass baritone Greer Grimsley should feel quite comfortable in his Charlotte debut as Vanderdecken, the Dutchman. Complementing Grimsley will be soprano Elizabeth Kataria, also making her Charlotte debut, with Opera Carolina maestro James Meena conducting the Charlotte Symphony. Celebrating Wagner’s 200th birthday, performances are sung in German with English subtitles. (Perry Tannenbaum)
