A transatlantic collaboration between Dutch beatmaker Nicolay and emcee/singer Phonte, formerly of North Carolina hip-hop hope Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange makes aggressively sophisticated R&B, bending mainstream music to fit its own underground logic. Last year’s Love in Flying Colors is bathed in summery electro-funk, bright and florid and starry-eyed; Nicolay’s house-inflected grooves mix artisanal R&B and throbbing techno to augment a bedrock hip-hop thump.
