Witness for the Prosecution

Agatha Christie novels and plays have routinely been turned into exemplary motion pictures, and this 1957 puzzler is one of the very best. Charles Laughton stars as Wilfrid Robarts, an English barrister who agrees to defend a hapless man (Tyrone Power) charged with murdering an elderly woman for her money; only the accused’s wife (Marlene Dietrich) believes in his innocence. That’s Elsa Lanchester, Laughton’s real-life wife, as the private nurse who’s perpetually annoyed at Robarts’ refusal to take better care of himself. This acknowledged classic, shown as part of the Main Library series Order in the Court: Seven Classic Courtroom Movies, earned six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Actor (Laughton), Supporting Actress (Lanchester) and Director (Billy Wilder).
