| “A Blended and Ignored History: Blacks, Whites, and Traditional Southern Appalachian Music”

Dr. Bill Lawing, J. Estes Millner Professor of Music, Davidson College For a century, American song collectors focused upon Scotch-Irish musicians to frame the narrative of Appalachian music. In looking at the tradition more carefully today, we find several important streams of Appalachian music from African American musicians. Dr. Lawing will explain how songs, legends and instruments vital to the tradition show multiple influences from cultures which blended together to create this distinct musical language.
