A Celebration of Alan Poindexter

He would have turned 48 on Aug. 23, but the one-time wunderkind of the Charlotte theater scene died in early July. So Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, where he served as artistic director for more than 10 years, and the Charlotte theater community that loved him so well are staging A Celebration of Alan Poindexter, a three-hour-long shindig on the night before his birthday. The festivities will begin at 7 p.m. on Aug. 22 in the Spirit Square lobby, where friends, family, colleagues, students and people who admired Alan’s work can mix, mingle and swap war stories about his amazing 25-year career. Then at 8 p.m., the celebration drifts into McGlohon Theater, where a tribute AV presentation will be the centerpiece for a two-hour long parade of reflections and reminiscences from the people who knew Poindexter best — before and after his controversial starring performance in Angels in America. We don’t expect that there were too many shy folks who worked with or for Alan (not outside the costume shop, anyway), but event organizer Tim Parati tells me that readers will be provided for people who would like to share their thoughts but would rather not get up and speak.
