Of Mexican-American songwriter Alejandro Escovedo, Chicago Tribune music critic Greg Kot wrote: “Escovedo keeps getting better at an age when most artists are on cruise control.” Thing is, Kot wrote that eight years and five albums ago. But Kot was right. Since rebounding from a nearly fatal bout of hepatitis C in 2003, Escovedo has produced his finest work, churning out alluring and noir-ish Americana with great lyrical heft.
