WILD CUB

That Wild Cub’s current album is called Youth should come as a surprise to no one. Nor should it surprise anybody that lead singer Keegan DeWitt also writes scores for motion pictures and documentaries. Wild Cub’s songs are full of the kinds of big, broad emotions that characterize adolescence and would serve as a nice backdrop to a movie about, well, adolescence. There is something magnetic about the single, “Thunder Clatter,” which owes a big debt to afro-pop and has an undeniable jubilance. Elsewhere, the group seems to be trying hard to emulate another “wild” band, Wild Nothing, but they simply lack Jack Tatum’s almost preternatural ability to write killer hooks, and actually wind up being kind of reminiscent of Phil Collins. They really are pretty OK. But, having only been a band since 2012, they have some growing yet to do. (Rachel Bailey)
