Re: “Wesley Mancini leaves gay advocacy to next generation

Re: the article in this week’s Loaf about Charlotte philanthropist Wesley Mancini shutting down his personal foundation, I write to express sincere gratitude to Mr. Mancini and to the board of directors of his Foundation for all the great work they have accomplished on behalf of equity and inclusion in the Charlotte region.
BareBones Theatre Group was the recipient of a $3,500 grant in November 2005 to support our production of the play Five Women Wearing the Same Dress by Alan Ball (known to most as the creator of Six Feet Under and True Blood.) That grant enabled us to produce our riotous comedy about five disgruntled bridesmaids (including a feisty, sexy lesbian) for 11 performances in Oct 2006. Nearly 1500 people attended the production, a 70% increase over previous shows, making it the best-selling show in BareBones’ history of Charlotte productions. Theatre critic Perry Tannenbaum subsequently named that production of Five Women Wearing the Same Dress as Best Comedy in Creative Loafing and counted among his ‘Sweet Sixteen’ best shows for the 2006-07 season.
Without the support of the Mancini Foundation grant and several other generous supporters, including the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center and the Arts & Science Council, we wouldn’t have been able to produce such an outstanding production. Our thanks to Mr. Mancini for all that he does and has done for the Charlotte community.
Sincerely,
Anne Lambert
