Bebel Gilberto’s father Joao invented the laid-back bossa nova sound, and her step-mother Astrud is the sultry voice behind the smash bossa nova hit “The Girl From Ipanema.” But even without her impressive bloodline, Gilberto is a marvel. Her feathery alto floats above a seductive mix of Brazilian jazz, lilting pop and rhythmic electronica. She shines on English and Portuguese covers, but her best songs are her own strikingly modern yet classic nuggets.
