The Urban Ministry Center encompasses many buildings, programs and dedicated people, creating an urban oasis for Charlotte's homeless. A few blocks from the Square, "The Urb" offers a daily soup kitchen and much more: mail service, showers, counselors, substance-abuse treatment, a laundry, art classes, resume advice, a communal garden, sculptures and, most importantly, a welcoming, helpful environment. In addition, the center's Housing Works program was key to launching Moore Place, which offers small apartments and on-site case management for the chronically homeless. And it does all this without using a cent of taxpayer money.
