Once upon a time, there was only one game in town — namely, CPCC’s Summer Theatre — if you were looking for professional-grade, homegrown musicals. Now all of our established companies have the knack. Best of the past season for sheer power was ATC’s Passing Strange, with Jeremy DeCarlos turning in an unforgettable performance as an expatriate poseur singer-songwriter who returns to his suburban L.A. roots older and wiser. For sheer spectacle, you should have checked out CTC’s The Reluctant Dragon, a miracle of ropes, pulleys and a gargantuan puppet, with the marvelous Mark Sutton inside the dragon rig, sounding veddy British indeed.
