Ever since coming into its own with its critically acclaimed, self-released third album, Wild Mountain Nation, and hitting mainstream success with 2008’s Furr, Blitzen Trapper has been a band defined as much by the alt-country/folk genre it’s most frequently associated with as by its tendency to eschew labels, favoring experimentation and eclecticism. The results have been mixed through the years, with a noticeable falling off since its 2008 high water mark. Still, its daring and skilled musicianship saves even the most comparably lackluster of releases. Taken as a whole, the band’s catalogue is impressive, and it continues to engage audiences with its ability and willingness to redefine its sound, adding classic and psych elements most recently. This show is guaranteed to have more high than low points, and even the low points are pretty good when compared to the competition. (Jeff Taylor)
