Call Me Madam: The Making of An American Millionaire

Written and performed by Charlotte native Kami Shalom, Call Me Madam: The Making of a Millionaire takes us back to post-Civil War days. Born on a Southern plantation in 1867 to emancipated parents, orphaned at age 8, and widowed at 19, Sarah Breedlove was not to be daunted by her humble beginnings. Sarah remarried and rebooted her life, becoming Madam C.J. Walker, the entrepreneurial empress of beauty and hair-care products, and America’s first female self-made millionaire. Shalom first told this inspirational story last March in southwest Charlotte, with original songs, choreography and graphics supplementing the narrative — and portrayals of more than 20 characters. Now the one-woman show comes to Duke Energy Theater in an On Q production directed by Candace Jennings. (Perry Tannenbaum)
