They don’t get credit for it, but Hall & Oates brought Philly Soul to the masses. They did it by adding rock swagger, nervous New Wave energy and sharp cinematic production to soul, while retaining the music’s rolling cool, creamy vocals and insistent heartbeat. By the mid-’80s, the former folkies were a juggernaut, surpassing the Everly Brothers as the most successful pop duo in history. Hall & Oates’ commercial glory days are long past, but strip away the brittle ’80s sheen and artfully constructed pop-soul gems like “Private Eyes” and “I Can’t Go for That” still shimmer, remaining sexy, seductive and catchy as hell.
