His name, like his music, is a fusion of East and West. Clarinetist Shankar Tucker composes a trance-inducing mingle of jazz and Indian classical music. He opens a juncture and sets up shop where his classical and jazz-wind instrument crosses paths with the timeless rhythms of Indian music. Tucker trained at the New England Conservatory as well as in Mumbai, where intensive training is required to learn Indian classical music, though he’s not averse to fusing some pop and folk into the mix. His compositions are enhanced by finely-versed Indian singers and musicians, all well-established in their own performing careers. Listen to some works on his popular YouTube channel called the ShrutiBox. (Samir Shukla)
