His comforting baritone made Don Williams a huge country star in the ’70s, here in the States as well as Europe. Affectionately known as the Gentle Giant, his songs are easygoing, working-man stuff, devoid of glitz, that digs deep into American rural sensibilities with a mix of traditional country and country-pop. Over the decades, Williams has never strayed far from his hit-making parameters, sticking with his tried-and-true signature laidback style. But Williams has never been dull or dry, either, and is able to draw listeners into the song as if inviting them to the barstool next to him with a friendly pat on the back. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame a few years back and is on the road working his latest recording, Reflections, out this week. (Samir Shukla)
