A Novello Evening with Charles Frazier

North Carolina native Charles Frazier saw his first novel, Cold Mountain, go straight to the top, becoming an international best seller, a critically acclaimed film and the winner of the 1997 National Book Award for Fiction. Now Frazier's back with his latest book, Thirteen Moons. Frazier will be interviewed by UNC TV's North Carolina Bookwatch host, D.G. Martin, with special guest, Myrtle Driver, a member of the Cherokee Nation who is working to translate Thirteen Moons into the Cherokee language.

Charlotte writer and business owner, Gail Z. Martin discovered her passion for science fiction, fantasy and ghost stories in elementary school. Her new book, The Summoner is the first in her fantasy series, The Chronicles of the Necromancer. Her second book is already set for a January release.

At the age of 13, Ishmael Beah became a solder in war-torn Sierra Leone. A gentle boy at heart, he found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. Saved years later by a UNICEF rehabilitation program, Beah became a human rights activist and the author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier.

A Special Appearance for Novello by Kevin Clash

Kevin Clash is the voice and puppeteer of Sesame Street's "Elmo," "Hoots the Owl," and "Baby Natasha," and is the author of My Life as a Furry Red Monster: What Being Elmo Has Taught Me About Life, Love and Laughing Out Loud. This program will be geared to educators and other adults.

If it's time for Novello, it's time for WordPlay Saturday, PLCMC's annual street festival that celebrates books and the joy of reading for youth of all ages. This year's theme is "Reading Opens Your World" and sets an international flavor for the booth activities, street and stage performers, and even some of the food vendors.

The day at a glance:

9:30-10:30 a.m. -- Book Brunch

Meet, greet and eat with notable and award-winning authors and illustrators of youth literature in ImaginOn's Wachovia Playhouse. This is a free event (no tickets or reservations required).

11 a.m.--4 p.m. -- WordPlay Saturday

Enjoy the library's free, literary street festival for kids and families, right outside ImaginOn!

11:30 a.m. -- Book Signing by Book Brunch Authors

By popular demand, the award-winning children's and young adult authors and illustrators will be autographing at WordPlay! Books will be available for purchase in the ImaginOn Gift Shop.

2--3 p.m. -- A Novello Afternoon with Kevin Clash

As part of Novello, Kevin Clash, the voice and puppeteer of Sesame Street's "Elmo," will be appearing in ImaginOn's McColl Family Theatre. Seating for this event is limited. Tickets are free but reservations are required at 704-973-2828. Clash will sign books afterward in the Author Booth outside ImaginOn.

4 p.m. -- WordPlay Saturday ends, but the fun doesn't stop. Stay for Children's Theatre's season opener, The Wizard of Oz, in the McColl Family Theatre at ImaginOn. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 704-973-2828.
