Ghost The Musical

Sometimes you succeed by the sheer dint of daring. When it hit the silver screen in 1990, Ghost was a delightful blend of romance, comedy, fantasy and suspense, starring a perfect couple, Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, and the perfect comedienne, Whoopi Goldberg. But surely, with all those ghostly special effects, the movie was immune to a stage adaptation, right? Critics were certainly skeptical when Ghost the Musical opened in April 2012, and I’ll agree that Whoopi’s Oscar-winning role, as the storefront soothsayer who helps the murdered Sam Wheat connect with endangered beloved Molly Jensen, shouldn’t have eased so far down the road to R&B. Yet the technical effects decried as gimmicky were so cool, particularly when Sam is learning how to be a ghost and connect with the material world. If they can package everything on tour that they put on the Broadway stage, I think you’ll agree that Ghost the Musical is a triumph, despite its piddling four-month run in New York. At Belk Theater for eight performances, April 1-6. (Perry Tannenbaum)
