Gina Stewart

Talk about Renaissance people! You weren't talking about Renaissance people? Well, if you were talking about Renaissance people, you'd have to mention Ms. Stewart, one of those singer/multi-instrumentalist/actor-types who's shown up on Charlotte stages from NoDa to ... um, Uptown. Gina is the founding bass player for Charlotte's pre-riot grrrl pop-punk band the Blind Dates, along with Penny Craver (she of Dish restaurant and Tremont Music Hall fame) and singer/songwriter Deanna Lynn. The Dates recently got back together (along with guitarist Holly Harper) for some reunion gigs. Gina's most-known these days for being one-half of now-defunct Doubting Thomas and one-third of currently active Volatile Baby. The Volatiles just recorded the song "Christmas Without You" to benefit the Kristen Foundation, named for band member Allison Modafferi's sister, who went missing more than four years ago. The foundation supports family members of missing people older than 18. On Dec. 9, Volatile Baby will open for recently-found country-rock singer Carlene Carter, granddaughter of Carter Family matriarch Mother Maybelle (look at the name on Gina's shirt, at right), daughter of June and step-daughter of Johnny Cash. Here's a little factoid about Gina that you may not know (unless you've been to the Blind Dates Web site): If she didn't live here in Charlotte, Gina says she might just skedaddle to Cozumel, down yonder in the hot sun and cool shade of our sister-nation México. Below are five more little-known nuggets of luv from Gina -- the things that are rockin' her world these days:

1. Cowboy boots. "Used, beat-up cowboy boots ... the Rat's Nest in NoDa has a wall of them."

2. The other Elvis. "Playing old Elvis Costello records really LOUD and acting them out ... in the car ... alone."

3. The paintings of Duy Huynh. "A Charlotte painter, Center of the Earth Gallery ... He is my Michelangelo."

4. Dance. "Dancing, dancers -- all of them. Especially those Moving Poets."

5. Creation. "Plaza Midwood's new restaurant, complete with Sara the waitress."
