Hardin Minor

Charlotte's "Mime In Motion"

Best Downtown Bar: Double Door Inn. Historical place, down to earth, real music, good bartenders, hefty shots.

Best Place to Jog: Elizabeth / Plaza-Midwood Neighborhoods. Because of the trees, the variety of scenery and friendly people. Lots of sidewalks and surprises.

Best Celebrity Hairdo: Hope Nichols (owner of Boris & Natasha; entrepreneur, producer, musician). Hope's hair is like a psychedelic Medusa but it won't turn you to stone... she makes you happy instead!

Charlotte's Sexiest Woman: (tie) 1. Linda Minor (my wife): She's got great style, real smarts, knows the meaning of love (friendship), an awesome mom and fantastic lover! 2. Shannon Wiseman ("Miss Winston"): Great looks, body & moves with a good rockin' energy that says, "Let's have fun!" 3. Jade Wills, BellaBella Makeup and Design artist: As an artist, Jade knows which "look" can make any woman sexy. She herself is beautiful, exotic and adventuresome, loves life and puts you at ease. 4. Tera Schulz, modern dancer: Because of her youth, weird cool look/style, extraordinary physical facility, onstage presence and sense of the unusual.

Best Video Store: VisArt. Most complete, alternative and unusual selection; not a corporate superfranchise. Funky but accessible labyrinth store layout; awesome community board and film notes; encourages participation; good rates.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
