Imax: Mummy dearest

Monday, Feb. 18

Discovery Place is taking us on a trip through ancient Egypt, the land of the pharaohs. The difference this time is a CSI spin. Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs follows the discovery of a tomb containing 40 royal mummies, including the cloth-wrapped corpses of Ramses the Great, his father Seti I, and his son. Then, it veers off onto a forensic journey to use the material from this "ultimate archaeological find" to study modern diseases. Actor Christopher Lee (Saruman from The Lord of the Rings) narrates. Runs through April 17. Times vary. $6-$8. IMAX® Dome Theatre, Discovery Place, 301 N. Tryon St. 1-800-935-0553.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
