Janelle Monáe, the 27-year-old singer, is doing her best to infuse as much rhythm into R&B as she can. Often compared to James Brown for her dance-her-ass-off performances, Monáe is also defining herself as a true artist — she’s spent time at concerts finger-painting while performing. She mines the archives of traditional soul as much as Prince and Outkast for inspiration on the way to songs that can get you on your feet one moment and pondering the meaning of life the next.
