Most people are familiar with the artist formerly known as Cougar from his hits -— “Jack and Diane,” “Pink Houses,” “Cherry Bomb,” etc. But over the years Mellencamp has steered his Americana car further down the songwriter’s road, focusing more on the craft and lyrics than on selling albums.
