Lyrical and badass, controversial and compassionate, Chilean MC Ana Tijoux pioneered a place for women in Latin rap. Breaking into the scene when macho reggaeton ruled the roost, she transcended her peers, bubbling up in the U.S. after being featured on Breaking Bad. Drawing on Andean folk music and jazzy rhythms, Tijoux’s protest is joyous — relying on an open heart rather than a clenched fist. (Pat Moran)
