MADD MEN: The Morning Maddhouse crew
Commuting via auto in the morning means one thing: traffic. Riding along Independence Boulevard, for example, expect at least one accident or traffic jam that will make even the most "zen" driver drop a few "F" bombs. And I-485 in the morning? Forget it. You're going to be sitting ... and more than likely, listening to the radio. So, what are road warriors listening (and/or what should they be listening to) to during their morning commute?
No Limit Larry and The Morning Maddhouse (WPEG, 97.9 FM, Monday-Friday 6 a.m.-10 a.m.): Charlotte's longest running hip-hop morning show, No Limit Larry and the Morning Maddhouse boasts the crunkest host in the Carolinas. No Limit got his start while working at the campus radio station as a student at Johnson C. Smith University. The Charlotte native then took what he learned and got an internship at Power 98 with former afternoon host the late Nate Quick. Now, he's the face and voice of Power 98. John Boy & Billy (WRFX 99.7 FM, Monday-Friday 6 a.m.-10 a.m.): When one of your show's players is self-described as a "curmdegeon-at-large," the only thing to be expected is the unexpected. That's part of the charm of the John Boy & Billy show, which airs on 99.7, WFRX and is syndicated across the nation. Charlotte, however, is home base to the show, which pokes fun at everything and everybody. Combine that with some classic rock, and you won't even notice that sputtering car cut you off. www.thebigshow.com.
The Ace & TJ Show (WNKS 95.1 FM, Monday-Friday 6 a.m.-10 a.m.): The Ace & TJ show is like MTV on the radio — pop music, pop culture, and people sometimes getting punked. Besides, you have to love a show that reads its own hate mail across the airwaves. The Ace & TJ Show, much like John Boy & Billy, is syndicated but calls Charlotte home. www.acetj.com.
Tanner in the Morning (WSOC 103.7 FM, Monday-Friday 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.): Rob Tanner, the host of Tanner in the Morning, appeals to Charlotte's country-fried roots. And the guy likes a good debate — as he told Creative Loafing in 2007: "I like to tell people what I think. They don't always have to agree with what I'm saying. Charlotte Talks with Mike Collins (WFAE 90.7 FM, Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-10 a.m.): If news and opinions on issues facing Charlotte and the surrounding area is what you need to keep you from going off on a road-rage-fueled attack on the driver in front of you, then tune into Charlotte Talks with Mike Collins. The one-hour talk show airs live and is repeated in the evenings at 9 p.m. Launched in April 1998, Charlotte Talks is a forum for the discussion of politics, growth, the arts, culture, social issues, literature, human interest, the environment and more. www.wfae.org.
