Back in the ’70s, when disco and Southern rock ruled the world, one mixed-race Southern funk-rock band combined the two into a party sound that didn’t just tear the roof off the sucker, it broke down barriers. When stunning lead singer Joyce “Baby Jean” Kennedy ripped into “Baby Love” or her vocalist partner Glenn “Doc” Murdock shouted over hard-rock riffs, “I don’t know, but I’ve been told / niggazz can’t sing rock ’n roll,” rock and funk fans alike got slayed.
