New Years Eve Guide 2015

From avant-garde and other events to house party etiquette

It's almost time for New Year's Eve and some of you are still scratching your heads and trying to figure out where to celebrate. Luckily, we've compiled a lengthy list of events, as well as some of our top picks for cheap, avant-garde and luxurious shenanigans. Knowing that some of you are homebodies and that nothing beats a good house party, we've also come up with a list of do's and don'ts for NYE behind closed doors and a list of drinks you might stir into the mix. Whatever you decide to do, you can't go wrong with some of these options. As a safety precaution, we've also included some of the best ways of getting around. (Don't take these transportation options for granted. It's better to be safe than sorry later.). May the force be with you all when 2016 rolls around. Cheers!

CHEAP DATES

Go to a brewery. Many craft breweries around town are having their own shenanigans, which don't require a cover. Sycamore Brewing's New Year's Eve party will feature food trucks, live music, a large heated tent, bottles of champagne, pitchers of beer and more. The environment is relaxed and there's no dress code, so feel free to break out the Ninja Turtle T-shirt and jeans. Dec. 31, 7 p.m. Sycamore Brewing, 2161 Hawkins St. sycamorebrew.com.

Petra's in Plaza Midwood. From 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., there will be live jazz and from 10 p.m. until close music will be provided by DJ Phillip. There's always a fun crowd here and the $5 cover is worth it for the entertainment. Also, the booze won't drain your bank account — that is, unless you let it. Free champagne toast at midnight, too. $5. Dec. 31, 8 p.m. Petra's, 1919 Commonwealth Ave. 704-332-6608. petrasbar.com.

Amelie's in Noda or Uptown. With two late-night Charlotte locations to choose from this French-style bakery is a no brainer. 'Wow' your date with an whimsical ambiance and a salted caramel brownie. Noda location, 2424 N. Davidson St. open 24/7; Uptown location, 301 S. Tryon St. (call for hours) ameliesfrenchbakery.com.

CLT New Year's Eve. This family-friendly and alcohol-free event is being held in Romare Bearden Park this year and features live entertainment. Surrounded by buildings and BB&T Ballpark, it's an ideal place for a romantic, low-key outing. Bring a blanket and wait for the sparks to fly (fireworks, that is). Dec. 31, 6 p.m. Romare Bearden Park, 300 S. Church St. charlottecentercity.org

Try a neighborhood pub. Not all pubs in town believe in the "go big or go home" NYE motto. Call to see whether or not they've succumbed to ridiculous cover charges. Big Ben British Pub's is among those that's keeping things classy without emptying your wallet. They're offering free cover, live music (CharleyHorse Trio) and a champagne toast at midnight. Call for seatings. Dec. 31. Big Ben British Pub & Restaurant, 2000 South Blvd. 704-817-9697. bigbenpub.com.

This upscale party also features music (DJ Skinner, DJ Fuzz, DJ Tober, Rob Knight, Kaizen, Simple Simon and DJ Kai). Tickets are all-inclusive with sushi, oysters, desserts a champagne toast at midnight and drinks throughout the night. While the garden closes before midnight strikes, you can enjoy the shenanigans here and get back to your pad in time to watch the ball drop on TV in the comforts of your own home. The focus of the party is to celebrate NYE traditions from around the world. But you'll also get the chance to walk the garden, which has been spruced up with lights and decor. There are also family activities, live accordion music and a biodegradable flying luminaries aka sky lanterns release — wishes for the New Year encouraged — at the end of the night. TOP 5 WAYS TO GET HOME

taxi-copy.jpg

5. Your own two feet — Whether you're headed to bed from a night on the couch, or stumbling down sidewalks from the neighbor's, this one's tried and true.

4. Uber — It's New Year's Eve. You can probably expect to pay $1,500 to go two blocks.

3. TakeHome — So, no one wants to be the D.D.? TakeHome will be serving as local designated drivers this holiday season. No word if they'll be willing to hit a drive thru on the way.

2. Via D.D. — No one wants to be the designated driver, but sometimes you have to take one for the team. There's no cheaper, safer way to go about it.

1. The walk of shame — Maybe that kiss at midnight meant a little extra. Perhaps they want to meet you for breakfast and would rather nudge you than call you to make plans.

NEW YEAR'S HOUSE PARTY TIPS

Do

Invite your neighbor At least give the poor folks some warning. The last thing you need is the cat lady next door straggling over at 11:45 to tell you and your friends keep it down. There's no work or school on New Year's Day, so the family next door will have no reason to call the police on you...unless, they're bitter about not getting an invite.

Sync the clocks Have you ever been at a Super Bowl party with two TVs and one is 10 seconds behind? It leads to problems when you hear cheering the next room over before you even know what happened. Make sure everybody in every room will be toasting in unison this New Year's.

Eat up before you turn up You don't want to be the guy or girl passed out in the tub at 11 p.m. A good belly-full of food will soak up some of that liquor and allow you to party into the night.

Pay your cable bill Yes, it's cliché, but watching the ball drop in NYC is a good thing for folks to rally around. Also, you can watch all the people in Times Square smush together for hours in the lead-up and be thankful your in a warm house and can get to a bathroom without being crushed.

Find the right Spotify station This is not the night for Adele's new album. It's not the time for emo folk, either. Let the banjos be, and play some of 2015's most high-energy stuff. Might we recommend something along the lines of Big Grams, Dead Weather or Kendrick Lamar.

Do NOT

Light a sparkler indoors Do we even have to explain this one?

Kiss whomever's closest at midnight As with the mistletoe, the final countdown of 2015 does NOT give you free reign to harass the nearest chick by trying to make out with her. Beside, her boyfriend might be in the bathroom and that's a good way to get your bell rung to ring in 2016.

Invite a gun nut The thing about people who love guns is that they spend all year arguing on Facebook about how important they are but never really get to use them except for during lonely trips to the range. Some use New Year's as a reason to show them off and shoot them into the air. Needless to say, this is idiotic.

Serve champagne before midnight Champagne used to be special. You'd only see people popping bottles for New Year's, job promotions or Jay Z video shoots. Until, that is, brunch became the biggest thing since sliced bread (toasted with a poached egg on it). Mimosas have watered down the importance of champagne. So, just for this one night, hold it off and pop the bottle when it's meant to be popped. Make champagne great again.

Break your resolution before 6 a.m. You promised yourself that 2016 would be the year that you finally ended it with that on-again-off-again boyfriend of yours. He screwed you over how many times? We know he's at the party and giving you that eye, but waking up in that same damn bed again won't be a good look.

TOP 5 NEW YEAR'S EVE DRINKS

drinks1.jpg

5. Champagne — Be a walking cliche.

4. Whiskey — Because sometimes you just drink to forget.

3. Martini — Sophistication is key.

2. Miller High Life — It's the champagne of beers!

1. AMF — Vodka, rum, tequila, gin... adios, motherfucker!
