PENITENTIA

Semi-professional choir VOX performs Lenten music of penitence and hope. Choral masterworks include Allegri’s early 16th century Miserere, which was deemed so beautiful by the Vatican that performances outside of the Holy See were prohibited for centuries. The ban was finally lifted only after a 14 year-old Mozart transcribed the piece from memory and gave it to a London publisher. Other works include Thomas Tallis’ Lamentation of Jeremiah Part I, and motets by Brahms, Poulenc and Mendelssohn.
