Abstract artist Peter Max has become rather renowned in the art world. It’s not what he paints, it’s who he paints: among his most recent subjects is pop-country princess Taylor Swift. Using a mix of colors, Max uses his brush to touch on the celebrities that rule contemporary culture. In a special exhibit at Wentworth Gallery, his paintings of Swift’s album covers will premiere with past work related to Woodstock, NFL helmets, the Statue of Liberty and a 10-cent postage stamp that he designed back in ‘74. Max, who has worked for a number of prestigious organizations including the World Cup and Grammy Awards, is also known for designing large-scale artwork to adorn modes of transportation, including one for Continental Airlines’ Boeing 777-200ER aircraft and one for the hull of a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. With all that in mind, he really doesn’t travel to Charlotte often, but he’ll be here during the opening reception.
