Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operetta The Pirates of Penzance tells the story of Frederic, who, having reached his 21st birthday, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and they fall in love. Frederic soon learns, however, that he was born in Leap Year on the 29th February, and so technically he has another sixty-three years before he can be free of his apprenticeship.
