Powwow: The Spark of Haliwa-Saponi Cultural Revitalization

Dr. Marty Richardson (Haliwa-Saponi) presents the lecture “Powwow: The Spark of Haliwa-Saponi Cultural Revitalization” on Friday, March 15 at USC Lancaster’s Native American Studies Center at 119 S. Main St. in downtown Lancaster, S.C. A founding member of the drum group Stoney Creek, Richardson will give a brief history of powwows and more about Stoney Creek. He also will discuss the role of the tribe’s language (Tutelo-Saponi) in song and powwow singing’s role in language revitalization. Held in conjunction with USC Lancaster’s 14th annual Native American Studies Week, the event is free and open to the public.
